Deron Freeman: Championing Justice and Breaking Barriers

Deron Freeman's journey from a standout baseball player in Windsor High School to a prominent attorney running his own firm is a testament to resilience, a commitment to justice, and the ability to transform challenges into opportunities. This narrative unveils the multifaceted aspects of Deron Freeman's life, delving into his experiences, motivations, and the impact he has made in the legal landscape.

Early Challenges and the Spark for Legal Advocacy

Growing up in Windsor, a predominantly white suburb, Deron Freeman faced racial taunts that fueled a desire to understand how to protect himself legally. "I was called the n-word a lot," Freeman recalls, highlighting the challenges he confronted. This early exposure to injustice and the civil rights stories recounted by his parents, who were active in the movement, ignited a passion for legal advocacy.

"I think I wanted to know how to protect myself, legally, and that sort of fueled my desire to be an attorney. Injustice of any kind infuriated me."

Athletic Achievements and Academic Pursuits

Deron Freeman's journey took an athletic turn as he became a standout baseball player for Windsor High School, contributing to the 1991 Baseball State Championship team. His love for baseball led him to attend Fairfield University on a baseball scholarship, majoring in political science and graduating in 1996. While baseball was his passion, Deron recognized the importance of having a fallback plan.

After a year off from academics, during which he worked for Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Hartford, CT, Deron enrolled in Western New England College's School of Law in Springfield, Massachusetts, graduating in 2000. His academic journey laid the groundwork for a legal career marked by tenacity and a commitment to justice.

Navigating Legal Waters and Professional Growth

Deron Freeman's foray into the legal realm began when, in his third year of law school, he joined his father's law firm in Hartford, CT. His father, Donald Freeman, a highly respected litigator with over 35 years of experience, provided a valuable mentorship. However, the seminal moment in Deron's career came in 2005 when his father, in an unexpected move, fired him.

"He really did it as a favor. He didn't need an extra associate. He brought me in the office one day and said, 'Listen, I can't pay you anymore. Time for you to go out on your own.'"

Initially devastating, this turn of events proved to be the catalyst for Deron Freeman's success. Leaving his father's practice, Deron soon discovered that it was the best thing that happened to him, leading to a doubling of his salary. In 2017, he reached out to his father, and the duo reunited to form a powerful legal partnership.

"It's not always about getting someone off who is guilty. It's about getting them what the law requires; getting them justice, basically. You recognize the frailty of the human psyche. You see people at their worst. And sometimes you see good people who just make bad decisions. I don't judge any of them."

The partnership between father and son brings a unique blend of experience, skills, and a commitment to detail.

The firm's clientele spans a spectrum, including individuals with challenging legal situations. Deron Freeman adheres to the belief that everyone is entitled to a defense, embodying the essence of justice in his practice.

Balancing Act: Family, Legal Practice, and Advocacy

Life as an attorney is not without its challenges for Deron Freeman. A divorced father of six children, he navigates the exhilarating, frustrating, and emotionally exhausting aspects of legal practice. His commitment is evident as his cellphone rings 24/7, and his days typically start at 6 a.m., concluding around midnight.

"You see people at their worst. And sometimes you see good people who just make bad decisions. I don't judge any of them."

With his law practice thriving, Deron Freeman's decision to merge with his father in 2017 reflects a strategic move. As the rainmaker, Deron focuses on recruiting and securing new clients, while his father handles case research and attends to legal minutiae. The synergy between them is palpable, creating a dynamic partnership.

"I think the merger will be good for both of us," says Donald Freeman. "To be successful, I think one has to spend the hours studying the facts and the law — and pay attention to detail. And maybe the most important is to be courteous, kind, and respectful to people."
